What Are Dental Implants?

A dental implant is a titanium post surgically placed into the jawbone to replace a missing tooth root. Once it fuses with the bone through a process called osseointegration, a custom crown is attached on top. The result looks, feels, and functions exactly like a natural tooth.

Dentures sit on top of the gum and do nothing to prevent bone loss. Cost Dentures have a lower upfront cost. Implants require a larger initial investment but often cost less over a lifetime because they rarely need replacement. Many patients with implants eliminate ongoing denture adhesive, relining, and replacement costs entirely. Candidacy Most healthy adults are candidates for implants. Sufficient bone density is required — if bone loss has already occurred, a bone graft may be needed first. Dentures are an option for nearly anyone regardless of bone volume.
